We had a busy, but glorious, weekend around the house. The B husband was rather grumpy, but despite this setback, we got a lot done. I cleaned the laundry room, which was a mess after some construction work done down there.
Most importantly, with some help from my husband, we planted our square foot garden! Last year was the first time we attempted a garden. Given my black thumb, I was not optimistic, but it was a huge success! We enjoyed fresh lettuce, spinach, swiss chard, and basil every night. The kids came home from daycare and snacked on sugar snap peas so that none ever made it into the house. We learned about cooking okra. It was a ball.
We are a little late this year, because I've been too preoccupied to review the book again and forgot that some seeds can be planted before the last frost. Whoops. So I'll have to keep buying lettuce for a little longer ($6 for a bag of mixed greens from the farmers market! Can't wait to pick it for free!).
I can't help but wonder if we'll see it through the season. I hope to be moving to DC by Labor Day in time for a Sept class.
I'm off for 2 days to transition the kids to the new daycare. My 4yo son seems excited, but also keeps saying spontaneously, "I love you, mama." I think he's a bit nervous. We said goodbye to our beloved nanny on Friday, but luckily we'll see her again soon, just not daily. I don't think baby L has any clue what's going on.
Crossing fingers that I get medically cleared this week and get onto the register!
That combined with my son's 4yo birthday and a huge party in my backyard would make for an exciting week.
We packed up the family and joined the Foreign Service in 2011. Currently in: Mexico City, Mexico!

Oh, that's awesome! I have read that book (I even OWN that book) and have always wanted to try a square foot garden!
I have a black thumb, also, and have long ago given up on the idea that I could ever grow a single edible thing. But I have always ALWAYS dreamed about it!
Would love to hear more as the Square Foot Garden moves forward. Seriously - I've always wanted one of those! How fun.
Oh I hadn't thought of that book in years. I may have to order a new copy. No idea my old copy is, probably molding away in storage. I am so excited about gardening again. Hope your garden grows well again this year! Good luck on getting onto the register.
Best of luck on the garden! My wife and I tried a small one two years ago but gave up in frustration when the local wildlife literally grazed it down to the roots. We needed lots of chicken wire and DDT, I think.
And it's wonderful to get that support from Mr. B! It means everything!
Kolbi, what's the weather like in Chengdu? Any growing possibilities? You might try it, the SFG method is kinda for dummies and it worked great for me!
I first tried it in Niger and got a few bits of lettuce before the sun scorched them.
FSOwannabe, sorry about your attempt! Places w lots of wildlife definitely have to be more aggressive.
I will post pics of last year's and our new one! The radishes are already peeking through. But now I have to add watering to my morning routine..:(
PS Shannon, sounds like you'll be able to grow in Malawi? That'll be great. When do you arrive?
