Why I want to join...

A few weeks ago, the NYT travel section featured Mauritius . I spent a few minutes lost in paradise and then showed the article to my husband. "See, honey? THIS is why I want to join the FS."

Not because I necessarily need to be posted to Mauritius someday, although I did learn that it's one of the most heavily bid posts in the FS, and the Talesmag reports are glowing (which is unusual, even for a place you'd think is great!). But because the FS opens up all these places that I assume I will never visit in my life.

I mean, there are places we hope to visit sooner than later (my list includes Turkey, Buenos Aires, Italy).
There are places I hope to visit someday (Greece, Australia, South Africa).

Then there are thousands of places that I probably will never make it to, unless I join the FS. Because if we're posted in mainland Africa (quite likely), well, maybe we'll be able to spring for a trip to Mauritius. And we'll see thousands of other sites that we would never see, in a million years, from our home in NY.

This is one of many reasons I want to join the FS.

I had that magic moment on safari in Tanzania, when I realized I was seeing animals and landscape in person that I'd only ever seen on tv or in zoos before, and it's way better in real life. When I was a kid watching all those animal shows, it never occurred to me I'd ever visit Africa, let alone live there.

I've also been thinking lately about all the great travel opportunities our kid will have that neither of us even dared to think about having when we were kids.

It's not always going to be glamourous, but it's always an adventure.

I came into the FS kicking and screaming. this was my husbands dream not mine. I didn't get on board until I visited Tanjung Lesung Sailing Club in west Jave while at our first post Jakarta. I stood on a deserted beach staring at bamboo fish traps watching the fishermen come and go. The whole scene was like something out of National Geographic.

Now I am addicted to dreaming of where we are going next. I know there are tons of places I will never see, but the places I have seen already, WOW!

I was definately a pusher for my husband to go after a job with the FS. Growng up in a cornfield, I dreamt of so many exotic places, most courtesy of PBS (as we only got about 5 tv channels). We aren't done with training yet and already dream about all the opportunities and memories we'll make. It's a different lot, this FS group of travel junkies... but man, do we love it so far!
And we'd take Mauritius in a SECOND too!!

Oh, I so want this to happen for you! As much as I am happy with where I am (BA) and where I'm going (SA), I appreciate it all over again when I realize people really WANT to come to these places. That said, you are welcome to visit us either place -- and I hope the invitation is reciprocated when you're posted in Mauritius!

modestmuse, for some reason I only just saw your comment, unless the date is wrong- what a kind invitation! Thank you a million times over! If we don't join the FS, I am going to have to take my husband to BA. He is DYING to go there. But you'll probably be gone by then! I love following your blog and growing family....same for you, Denise! How exciting that you are on to Dhaka. Definitely not a boring life.....

Tulum with tweens

I'm still here! Thought I'd write about our vacation to Tulum this past week. The kids' school is off for 'fall break,...
