Yesterday was a great day. I took the day off to be there for the pre-packout survey. I had to laugh when she asked me if we were going to pare down the items in the bookcase. Um, yea, we already did? I also got totally overwhelmed as we walked around the house - closets that I cleaned out 2 mos ago have gotten cluttered again! What do I do with all the toiletries and such? (Answer- pack a box of in-use toiletries and take them with us in the car). What about the cupboard full of oils and vinegars and other liquidy items? Also hoping to take them in the car.
We are lucky that we will have 3 cars heading to DC- we have two and my parents are bringing a truck (ok, mom?). So we will carry more than most people on our way down, and I am grateful for that.
But let's just say that I might be assuming more room than there will really be. I will pack this stuff a few days to a day in advance and try to fit it in the cars, so at least we'll know.
We also STILL have stuff we need to sell and donate. What a pain! I wish this was all done. I went to the consignment shop yesterday and dropped off some things, gave others to our daycare, dropped our new kids world map at the framers, etc. (I think I bought this world map , which you can't see very well and it's a little cheesy in person so I don't really recommend it. But I like the idea- we spent a while looking at the different animals all over the world. We also got the book Children Around the World from the library and it's become my son's favorite book recently).
A note to those on the register: Seriously, declutter now! I would be losing my mind right now if I had not been preparing for months in advance.
I had lunch at my favorite spot, Stanz in Larchmont. I will really miss that place!
I am still really loving the uncertainty of it all. Where will we go? I have no idea!!
We packed up the family and joined the Foreign Service in 2011. Currently in: Mexico City, Mexico!

So exciting! I am living vicariously through you :) I am sure it is stressful, but well worth it all in the end.
Sho
I am so excited for you...I hope to be in that situation soon. ; )
Yay! Good luck with everything. Enjoy the holiday and best of luck in DC.
B, I was getting all ready to tell you not to overestimate what you can put in the car until I kept reading and found you will have THREE cars! That will help. Once I packed enough clothes to get me through a month (in case my UAB is delayed), and added some files and a few other must-haves, my car is stacked full! I ended up chucking or giving away a lot of booze and kitchen staples (like half a bottle of olive oil), but I did have room for all of my spices. Now that the stress of the move is over, and I've had a few days to relax, I've let go a lot of my worry and I'm getting excited about this all over again - really looking forward to January.
Sounds like you're making great progress! I am hoping to do a deep dive into my things (literally) over the next 5 days. I'll let you know if there is any "lesson learned" after my pack-out next Thursday! :)
Yeah, once you are in the FS, you pretty much have to constantly declutter. There's just no other way.
It's great that you'll have three cars. We had two and they were packed full. I still couldn't fit our spices in. I had to pack them in UAB and it was hard to live without them until we got our UAB,. If you can pack them in one of the cars, I would.
Thanks for the comments, all! Good luck to Shoshauna and For Obsession- hope to hear your good news in the not too distant future.
Funny, I hear a lot about spices. I'm not much of a cook so this does not worry me, but it's funny that you couldn't fit them in, Daniela, given their size! You must have had a lot!
Glad you are relaxing a bit, sclawgirl...still owe you an em.
Yang, good luck!
ooh, and I forgot Becky...thanks for all the helpful tips and happy holidays to you!!
Good luck with your pack out. Sad but true story: I left my husband in charge of supervising the guy packing out the kitchen when we had our first pack out and somehow an entire cabinet was missed. By the time we discovered it, both of our cars were loaded beyond capacity so we had to give away several small appliances, like my crock pot, or leave one of our children behind. Talk about a dilemma...
Just another 2 cents after you've had your pre-packout survey. Contact the company prior to your packout and MAKE SURE they send enough people to do the packing in a timely manner ... and don't let them stay after 6 pm!
that is so funny Lisa! Hmm crockpot vs kid...depends on how difficult the kid has been lately....
Jill- how do I know how many is enough? I think they are planning to send 3. I'm kind of leaning towards less people so I can follow what they're doing. But what do I know?
@sclawgirl: how do you leave booze behind? it's the fuel that keeps FS families going. luckily, there are several great ABC liquor stores (VA liquor commission) close-by to falls church/rosslyn/crystal city oakwoods.
Just catching up on all your news from the last few months. Awesome! So happy to hear that the invite came through.
Your mention of Larchmont made me think of this FS blog where they mention Larchmont occasionally.
