Yesterday was Flag Day for the 160th, and it was as fun as ever. Most people looked really delighted with their assignments. I love to watch the families and see their reactions- shrieking, fist pumping, tears of relief, silent prayers, mad texting after the announcement, it's all there (if there were tears of sadness, I didn't see them!). I felt a bit like a proud parent since this was the class we sponsored. Good luck and congratulations, 160th! May your FS careers be long, happy, and successful!
As much as I would love to serve in many of the countries on their list, there was only one country I was really envious about: Brazil. Ever since I visited Brazil in 1998 with some Peace Corps friends, I have longed to live there and learn Portuguese. The good news is that there are tons of positions and it's one of the big four in Consular work (Mexico, India, China, Brazil). However, I do hear it's hard to get training in a world language after you receive tenure, especially if you already speak one, so there is a part of me that is nervous we will never be assigned there. I will just have to wait; there is nothing to do about it now, but I think about it often.
Last night we had a little happy hour with some DR-bound friends. Only 3 others came, but we had a good time. We have been receiving more information from post and I'm getting excited. I am so grateful that we received such a wonderful first assignment.
We packed up the family and joined the Foreign Service in 2011. Currently in: Mexico City, Mexico!

I'm still here! Thought I'd write about our vacation to Tulum this past week. The kids' school is off for 'fall break,...

1st round of offers went out today and did not head my way. I haven't checked recently, but think I was ranked about 24-28 before today....

I don't think learning Portuguese would be a problem if you already speak Spanish. There are definitely Portuguese students who are tenured officers and are in conversion programs. Hope that's still true by the time we get to mid-level!
Did you find out who is going to Cape Verde BTW? I'm curious!
thanks Yang, I didn't think about that! B has the name of the person going to Praia- I don't think I know him.
I've heard the biggest problem with getting a world language at mid-level is switching bid cycles. So many people, especially those with families don't want to be on the winter cycle and a 6 month language would switch you from summer to winter. If you are willing, you should be able to get the language.
Thanks for coming and rooting for our class!
Hiya B, it's Andrea D. Never give up hope with Brazil. You'll never know.
Hey, guess what? Made it to the OMS OA! Just got the letter today and in the next few weeks I'll get my OA date. It looks like they're really desperate to fill summer/fall classes. If all goes well, I may be on the register come late fall/early winter. *fingers crossed*
I don't know if you know, Diviya (can't remember if you met her) got the call and is leaving this month. We're all seeing her on Saturday for a final farewell. It's amazing, a bunch of folks from our study group got the call. We were really a good bunch. :)
Good luck in DR! When are you leaving?
