Hi!
I'm interested in becoming a FSO and I have a gabillion questions. I'm mostly worried about which "cone" to pick, but I have questions about the test, and about the life/culture of the Foreign service as well.
Would you be willing to email me? my address is corneliapilosophene at gmail.
Or, if you'd rather, I could just start asking away. First off: I'm thinking that consular affairs actually sounds like the best fit for me; I've read that they are the least likely to take their work home with them, and also when things in a country go kaflooey, they are directly responsible for making sure American Citizens are ok/ get out ok/ at least get their bodies repatriated properly, if at all possible. Both of those things appeal to me.
I guess the thing is that I'm worried that I'm missing something(s) cool or appealing about the other cones. The only one I'm completely sure I don't want is management.
The other thing is, I've studied both Arabic (Egyptian modern) and German, and while I've gotten good feedback on both ("Oh, you're so good!") I have no idea how that would translate on the Foreign Service scale of competence (or whatever they call it). I think I probably used to be something like a 2 on both, but it has been so long that I really don't want to claim them and then fail the test. Do you know if they will let you test if you only claim a 1? And how does that affect your likelihood of getting in-- or does it only affect things after you get in?
Thank you!
