I feel like I have little to say this week as I wait...and wait…and wait. I may be getting used to this waiting thing. Waiting for the Spanish test results was my hardest week wait. Sept offer time was nearly as tough, but I didn’t want it as bad.
October, I want. I might make it as one of the last offers extended early next week, but I might not. Still, I would say the wait is not killing me this time. Now I really am FS material, see? I'm an excellent waiter!
I'm grateful for the camaraderie of others waiting with me, especially Caroline, Chris, and Abbie. Looking forward to being colleagues someday.
If I don’t make October, I don't know if or when I’ll make it in. The next class is January, which is far away and therefore will be filled with the highest scorers. I would think the Feb class would be similar. So I’m thinking that if hiring remains the same, I might get into the March class at the earliest, or a later spring class. That’s IF hiring and testing remain the same.
I’m trying to think of the silver lining if I don’t make it (yes, I know, I’m getting ahead of myself. But I like to prepare myself for disappointment, rather than get my hopes up). For one, we won’t have to kill ourselves to get the house ready. Second, like ADA recommends, I am going to seize the moment and do the things I’ve been wanting to do in NY. For example:
1) cross country skiing. I’ve been wanting to try this out for at least 3 years. I’ve been pregnant, nursing, or w/o a babysitter for all 3 winters, but I’m going to prioritize this one.
2) Visit the Adirondacks . This one is hard because it's about 6 hours away so we need more than a weekend. And with fall/winter approaching, it might not happen. But I'll try.
3) In the remaining summer weekends we have, get to the pool and beach!
4) Continue M's swim classes. We have a Y literally blocks from us that we have used rarely, until we signed him up for swim class a few months ago. We have really enjoyed the community of other parents who are ethnically diverse and very friendly. And we're excited that M is on the verge of really swimming.

Ok, this made me feel better. Back to waiting.

You have a much better feel about this since you are on the register, but it sure seems like you need at least a 5.6 in every cone now to make sure you get a call and even higher in both PD and POL.
Learning Arabic is definitely doable, especially if you are fortunate to live in an area that has a decent concentration of native speakers.
I am still mulling over if or when to jump back in the fray and can't imagine the high of having made it through the OA and then having to start over again.
Hope that you don't have to fight that battle again.
I really, really hope that there is a next round, and that you're going to get the call for this class. It is very weird how things are trickling out.
Regardless, I wish you and the husband luck with taking the FSOT. Are you going to keep the same cone or try something different?
Keeping my fingers crossed!
Hello B files! I'm sorry you have to wait. Being a military wife makes me really good at the hurry up and wait but that doesn't mean I like it so I know how you feel! I do have a question for you. How many A-100 classes do they have each year? Good luck and keep your spirits up! ~L
thanks everyone for the supportive words.
hopeful- I really don't know, a month ago I would have said that 5.5s would be golden in every cone but Pol/PD but I just don't know now. We'll have to see what happens over the next 6 mos.
lisa- thanks so much. If I try again, it will be in Con, definitely - that's the cone for me.
elmoisgr8- funny, at first I didn't understand your screen name! Cute. Over the past year or 2 (I don't know how long the hiring surge has been going on), they have had 8 classes/year w/ roughly 98 people (the capacity of the A100 room) each (some have been smaller). But we don't know whether the new year will bring reduced hiring.
You are so close, they just gotta call you. I am keeping my fingers and toes crossed for you! But it's a good thing that you have plans for fun things to do while you are waiting. It's a good way to keep your sanity. Plus, one day when you end up posted in an ungodly hot country you'll have those cross-country skiing and Adirondack memories to keep you cool. Best of luck to you and hubby on the FSOT in October but hopefully you'll learn next week that you don't have to take it.
I'm impressed by your sanity! =)
PD hopeful here, just taking a little time out of my busy morning to muddle my head with thoughts of the register, October calls, and the fact that a 5.7 sure ain't what it used to be.
I had managed to put the FS process aside...achieved a state of zen... and then BANG: security clearance came through in the midst of October calls. Now I'm back to obsessing.
I don't like my chances at all for this round, but a call is still POSSIBLE, making concentration IMPOSSIBLE.
There is no point to any of this, except to share with my fellow Register-ites, the only people who truly understand...
I do realize that my situation could be much worse, and am thankful for my position.
I enjoy your blog, B-Files. I wish I could channel MY restlessness into home organization. :)
neesh
thank you guys for commenting and for the amazing support.
neesh, so do you have a 5.7?? I agree, it's impossible to concentrate, and it is helpful to share w others! Best of luck to you!!
Yeah, 5.7. Seems like the Oct class must be smaller than the 90-something usual. But who knows--maybe fewer are going on the DNC list because it's too risky.
so you didn't get in w a 5.7?? I'm so sorry. I do think this class must be smaller.
The October class starts in FY2011n correct? If so, that's why it's smaller. They're operating under a continuing budget resolution, and under that, they can spend only 80% of what they did in 6)2010, which means around 80 students, rather than high 90's. I'm at FSI now, and there's been a lot of talk about what will happen with hiring this next year. I don't want to worry you, bit for your own planning purposes, you should know that they are expecting classes to shrink and/or that there will be fewer of them. Before the hiring surge began, A-100 was 7 weeks, and they made it 5 weeks so they could hold more classes. Anticipating a smaller budget and reduced hiring, they are talking about making A-100 longer again. I don't think anyone here expects hiring to keep up with the same pace as it has been. So, definitely retest, and figure out which CNL or SCNL will be easiest for you to pick up, and go for it. DO NOT wait for the registers to hire down to your score! I hate to be a downer, bit I've been reading for a while, and know how much you want this. Keep in mind, too, that they are way more liberal with giving out those CNL 2's than they are with Spanish 3's, from everything I've heard from people about the phone tests. Best of luck.
thanks anon (why not post w your name?), I do appreciate the info. This is what I've been figuring but you give a little more meat to my theory.
I'm with you. I'm going to start living in the moment instead of killing myself over it. I've been obsessed for too long, and I can't take any more! So I will be focusing on my life here and discovering hobbies....and most importantly laying off the A-100 Yahoo boards.
