Isn't there another way?

I've been holding off on blogging until I could say I was either in or out.

I thought for sure we'd hear over the weekend or at the very latest, Monday night. I've been waiting patiently (or anxiously, take your pick) with two friends who have 5.6s and who must be next in line to get an offer. Frankly, if they get in, I'll be just as excited as if it were me! But we heard last night that it will be Wed or Thurs until we hear. I take that to mean that someone (or multiple someones) higher than a 5.6 got added to the register and received an offer, so we have to wait until he/she declines/accepts (if you are that someone and reading this, it would be so nice if you introduced yourself...).

I'm probably 4-5 away from an offer and know in my head that it's not going to happen, but I just can't close this chapter until Pat says it's over.

They really can't come up with a better way to do this?

P.S. In language news, Arabic has been nixed by the B husband. Bummer. I think it's a beautiful language. I'm thinking about Mandarin (his choice, but I am scared I don't have the chops to learn this hard language!), Turkish, and Hindi. But the reality is that I don't have time or energy right now. I think I'm going to focus on getting back into exercising, which will probably be good for both my mental health/obsession issue as well as my physical health. We'll see what happens as the year unfolds.

Try Turkish! Arabic is a beautiful language, but from someone who has been studying it for four years, I can tell you it will be an almost impossible challenge to learn it quickly enough. Turkish should be easier, and as long as you focus on conversational ability rather than wasting time on hard grammar (besides what is necessary for speaking, of course), you might be able to get quite good at it in a short period!

Ahhh yes I do not think I will make it to October either, although I'm now next in line I think, so fingers heavily crossed that someone decides to drop out last minute. But heres hoping we're together in January!

Why the no go on Arabic? I have to respectfully disagree with anon. I am no language savant and I went from scratch to getting the .5 in under nine months. It just really depends on what local resources you can tap into and how much time you realistically have to dedicate to it. I suspect for any language you have to make it your semi, full-time job if you don't have a background in it.

Hopefully it won't matter and you'll be doing cartwheels on Thursday.

The wait is agonizing - especially when you're so close! I hope that you get good news by the end of the week!

It's maddening, isn't it? I think they should allow candidates access to the list, so they can see for themselves where they stand at any given time. More transparency might make it less agonizing. I hope an offer comes through for you!

You are sooooo close. I am keeping my fingers crossed for you! If October is not your class, I know Jan will be taking you to DC!

Hang in there!

thanks everyone!! Your support is so helpful to me.

As for languages, the truth is that right now, I have very little time to devote to learning a tough language and not enough motivation. I still believe, although I may be wrong, that I will get into a spring class with a 5.57. If that starts looking MORE unlikely, probably around the New Year I will change tactics. At that point, I'll still have a year before I expire.

I love learning languages and would jump in if I had no kids and lots more money and time. But that's not my situation, so for now, I'm just dreaming and weighing the options, constantly.

I have to believe with a 5.57 that you are right on the cusp of getting the call. It sure does seem for those entering the process that 5.5 is the new 5.3.

thanks, hopeful, yes, indeed, I have been on the cusp for 2 classes! Hoping to get OVER that little mountain one of these days.
I think you're totally right about 5.5.

Sample size of 1, but on my OA day probably 2/3-3/4 of the group were Consular candidates. That surprised me a bit given their backgrounds and I was like, wow he/she would be a great fit in Econ or Pol.

yes, I've heard that a lot of people doing a 2nd candidacy turn to Con after Pol or PD. I don't really get that- I think Econ is much closer to the same type of reporting job and I think in small embassies there can be one person covering both Pol & Econ. So I don't really get it!!

Such stress! One thing to remember if you're going to take on a language: if they select you because of that language, tehy're going to send you where that language is spoken. So don't take on Arabic unless you want to go to the Middle East. Ditto Chinese. Good luck.

Tulum with tweens

I'm still here! Thought I'd write about our vacation to Tulum this past week. The kids' school is off for 'fall break,...
