Decluttering, one item at a time...

Well, the most gorgeous weekend on earth came and went and no sign of Hurricane Earl near NYC, thankfully (sorry to those who got pummeled).

We canceled a trip to my family's cabin in West Virginia to work on the house. 3 whole days should allow us to get lots done, right? Unfortunately, no. My husband was sick most of the weekend and little M was feverish for 2 days. Everyone rallied and played outside, but there wasn't much nose to the grindstone or in this case, paint to the white picket fence.

I accomplished a few things:
  • Cleaned out the linen closet. Can I get a hallelujah?? That baby was a huge mess. I found lots of expired medications to bring to our area's Household Recycling Day.
  • Removed old photos from about 7 albums and stored in photo-safe envelopes inside photo safe boxes. I like these from Exposures a lot. The cost does add up, but I'm finally ready to store these photos right. But I should add that I'm throwing away a lot of crummy photos so that I'm only storing the ones I care about. Big project. I'm just taking it one box or photo album at a time.
  • Started going through my desk and pulling out a ton of documents for shredding at the HRD mentioned above (having this deadline is very helpful for us!). I'm also realizing that most of our papers, with the exception of a handful of important documents, can be scanned. Unfortunately, our big printer/copier/scanner doesn't mesh with our new laptop. That sucks. So we may be buying a small scanner soon.
  • Did research on yard sales in preparation for our first one on 9/18. I'm nervous about it for some reason. I just don't want to do all that work and be left with a ton of stuff at the end of the day.

We were hoping to put the house on the market in mid-October, but there is so much to do (I should add that we would like to sell even if we do not join the FS). Even with all the decluttering we've done, I look around and see STUFF everywhere. I spend my days taking stuff from one room to another and wondering why it just gets messy all over again. And I'm not talking about the kids' toys, which have a home. It's everything else!! Do we really need that much stuff? The answer, of course, is no.

Good for you for continuing the de-cluttering effort.

The (old paper) photos and negatives are my big achilles heel. I am scared to start on them.

Where will you live if your house sells before the FS calls? Will you just rent in the area?

Regarding yard sales, try to have yours when a few others in the area are happening, that way people make it a destination. And drop your prices if you really don't want to have to cart it off. Or else donate it. Good luck.

I was scared/reluctant to start, too, but just break it up into little jobs- one album or box at a time. Your progress will motivate you to keep going!

As for the house, I'm not too sure the house will sell or the FS will call. But if #1 happens, yes, we'll rent. And it might turn out to be the best thing for us after all.

Hallelujah! You deserve it! I need to scan old pictures too. I just keep worrying that with moves every two years the originals may get lost and I just can't imagine losing all those pictures. It's a daunting project and our scanner is not the best but I am not sure we're ready to invest in a new one.

thank you, Daniela!

I am not scanning my old photos except for my wedding ones. That would be such a huge project, I can't even contemplate it.

You might try scanmyphotos.com or a similar site. That's where I'm planning to send my wedding photos.

Look at the garage sale as fun money and you will be pleased with any outcome...you may also be surprised by the big sellers...

Oh and if you have help, the kids might want to do a lemonade/cookie stand...

Last, but not least, if you have stuff leftover, put up a "FREE" sign at your stopping time and/or freecycle the stuff...will likely be gone by the next day...

Good luck!

Tulum with tweens

I'm still here! Thought I'd write about our vacation to Tulum this past week. The kids' school is off for 'fall break,...
