talk to me about luggage

This post is just itching to be written. I can't hold it back anymore!

I confess; I love luggage and bags. And we have needed new ones for years. And even if I don't get "the call," we still need new luggage.

When I passed the OA and was allowed into FS Livelines (a yahoo group for people who are in the FS), one of the first searches I did was for packout and luggage. So I've done my research. I have a problem, ok? Will you indulge me? If you have great luggage strategies, philosophies, or just plain bags to tell me about, please do.

This is my tentative plan: I want to buy 2-4 LL Bean rolling adventure duffles . I'm not sure if I should buy medium or large, and not sure how many we should get. If we do begin this crazy lifestyle, I also want to buy 1-2 large or XL Adventure duffles for our bedding - pillows, mattress toppers, sheets- and perhaps other soft things to take with us as accompanied baggage.

Here are my questions:
1) is it worth buying good duffle bags rather than cheaper ones? LL Bean's are cheaper than others, probably because they don't have compartments (I plan to solve that with packing cubes, what fun!), but they are still more $$ than something I might buy at Marshall's or somewhere like that. I do like LL Bean's guarantee.

2) We have one super-large hard suitcase, and 2 smaller ones (carry-on size). Should we buy another hard suitcase or two to protect things en route? We will be bringing toys, household goods, etc if we move abroad, not just clothes.

3) If you have the adventure rolling duffles, what size do you recommend? Since we only have 4 arms between my husband and I, should we get some rolling and some larger ones with no wheels, or are those big ones too heavy?

4) Why did I not buy these when they were on sale last week? Because I was scared to jinx myself after my Spanish test! But we still needed them, even if I didn't pass the test! Darn it.

Ok, I'm done. Please, tell me about your luggage!! Even if you've never commented before, now's your chance!!

We needed new luggage but in the craziness around a-100 we didn't get a chance to buy any, so we used IKEA bags and moving boxes (we drove our two cars from FL).

With DC as a first post, we can postpone buying the good luggage until next year.

I guess what I am trying to say is that since you are from NY, you can wait for the next sale to buy your favorite L.L. Bean bags too because you won't really need it until you guys go overseas, which may not be for a while.

That said, I am a fan of the hardside 360' swivel luggage they have all over the place now. I would more than likely buy mine at TJMaxxx/Marshalls, Amazon or Overstock.

No advice on the luggage - but everytime I see an update on your blog, I expect to see you announcing your offer!

I have the largest size rolling duffel from LL Bean, and I will warn you, it is so heavy full that it's practically unmanageable. It's HUGE, too. I think you'd run into huge charges from the airlines if you had one. That said, it's fairly well made, and it served our purposes in our old life (we bought it to transport items via ferry). I didn't bring it with us to the FS, though, because it just wasn't practical due to the size.

I second Daniela's comment--you don't need luggage before A-100. We packed largely in trash bags (because we could smush a lot in the car that way). You don't need luggage for your stuff that you are shipping via freight.

I don't know about the duffels, as we only have one, and it's not a fancy brand.
I highly recommend swivel-wheeled suitcases. Do be careful on weight, though. The bigger bags you buy -- regardless of type -- the more they weigh, which means less weight for "stuff."

some of you are being a LITTLE too rational (daniela and Fso in waiting)...of COURSE we need luggage now, don't be silly!

seriously, thanks to all for the comments. That was exactly my concern w the largest duffle, so you answered that question!

fsowannabe, thanks for the optimism! next week we should hear!

zoe, do you have all swivels, or a combo? do you recommend multiple hard suitcases for those semi-fragile things?

more comments welcome!!

We use Eagle Creek bags and love them. They are light weight and a really good brand with a lifetime warrenty. We don't have any duffle bags, but that is just a personal preference. I agree with Zoe wheels are a must on every bag. We don't have any swivel wheel suitcases, but I have heard great things.
Good luck.

I was so glad you posted this, because even though I am not on 'the list' I have been considering new luggage as well. Our 'old faithful' just broke a wheel.

I, too, expect to see your offer announcement anyday!

for luggage, my family loves the 4 wheeled roll-abouts, you can push/pull in any direction; I have pushed 2 while pulling a third! I even get my 6 yr old to push, he just leans on them and walks:-) they are effortless. They have worked great for us. We got them from Costo, and bought one whenever we found them; over a few months we had the number we needed.

We have four LL Bean rolling dufflesand LOVE them...they are total workhorses and you can stuff anything in them. Peter also has and Eagle Creek upright and we all have the EC packing systems, really cuts down on wasted space...even the girls use them on their own. I have a Briggs and Riley set that I LOVE but will likely go Eagle Creek when/if it dies. We always have two "hard" ish upright rolling suitcases for the fragile stuff.

Oh and each girl has a rolling carrying. All bags are monogrammed, too, as cuts down on mistakes at the luggage carousel.

So, yes, yes, yes, to those duffels, BUT I agree you don't need this second.

thanks everyone!
Jen, what size rolling duffle do you have? I'm debating between medium and large.

Tulum with tweens

I'm still here! Thought I'd write about our vacation to Tulum this past week. The kids' school is off for 'fall break,...
