thoughts on "the call"

Don't get excited. No offer for me yet. I was prepared to wait until next week, but at the end of the day yesterday, two people got Con offers, that we know of. No other offers in any cone have been reported on our listserve. One Con offer was #19 as of yesterday and one was higher on the register. I can't help feeling frustrated that it was done at the end of the day on Friday. So if I didn't get one, is that it? Or did they only send a portion of them and I should keep hoping until Monday? I'm inclined to think that was it. I could hope for the 2nd round, but really- how many people decline an offer? If you're going to decline, you go on DNC.

I hate this part of the process! Up until now, it's all collegial. You help each other every step of the way. At the OA, you can all pass or none of you can pass- you're not competing against each other.

And when I was waiting to be cleared, again, it was just people helping each other through the wait.

And then, once you get on the register at a high rank, it comes down to numbers. One additional person above you could get the offer and you don't. I understand now that some people were probably not rooting for me to pass the Spanish test. And yesterday when #19 announced her recent addition to the register, just in time for "the call," I was envious. I didn't like that feeling at all, so I wrote and congratulated her, and she wrote back, and now I'm just glad for her.

This part is tough. Like all of this impossible process. So stay tuned.

Hang in there Bridget - I was #29 on the register a week before I got my offer - and I know some people below me got offers too. If they started late on a Friday, it could very well be that Pat only sent out a portion from this round.

It's frequent (or at least it used to be when my husband was waiting to get the call) that the register went up twice as many people that they needed. I.e. If they were looking for 20 Con officers, they went up the list to 40 or so (because of the number of people who turn down or decide they're not going to do it at all). When he got the call he was in the high 50s on the Pol register. It will happen. Enjoy your weekend - I speculate they're going to get a lot busier very soon - what with the packing and all : ). Cheers!

Surprisingly, people do decline. If I remember correctly, offers to fill the 19 or 20 PD positions in my class went down to the low 30s. Some people were DNC, but some much have decided, because a colleague I knew ahead of time got her PD offer more than a week after I got mine. That's because they always do the offers in waves. The first batch usually has 3-4 days to accept, then another wave goes out. They have 3-4 days to accept, and sometimes yet another wave goes out.

I have a good feeling for you for September.

I feel optimistic about your chances. There are people who didn't know they were on the register, who planned to DNC, but get offers before they get to it--those are some of the folks who decline. Some just decide, when the offer actually gets to them, that they aren't ready for it. Some have unexpected things come up. They do Friday offers a lot--it's painful to wait through the weekend, but hang in there!

I have the feeling you will get it this time around too. Try not to think about it, if you can, though! Don't let it drive you crazy!

Sometimes people get put on the register and called at the same time and then request to change to DNC.

I think the September class is very popular with Pickering Fellows and families who want to be in DC for the beginning of the school year and law school graduates who wanted to take the bar before starting A-100.

Hang in there- they do make calls right up to the beginning of the class.

the worst part about this lifestyle is the speculation... it happens to all of us for everything... what post is going to be on the list... will we get what we want ... can we get our kids in the school of our choice.

Best of luck during this waiting period.
